The genre of the figurative nude in photography is a timeless classic.  Artists have worked in this genre from the beginning photography and continue making important photographs today.  The changes that photography as an art form have have cycled through are vast and in many ways have complicated the making of photographs of the nude.  In my own work I strive to make work that is meaningful, beautiful, with a bit of mystery.  I accomplish this by working to create photographs that respect the models and the medium while paying attention to what I am trying to communicate to my viewer.

In this seminar we will work in a large daylight studio together with models who are experienced and able to help you be successful in making work you will be proud of.  The day of photography will include a short lecture and demonstration followed by a 2 hour session with 2 models on separate sets in the large studio. The class is limited to 6 students making for plenty of time for each student to explore ideas with each of the models.  Prior to the studio day students will receive a PDF study guide I have prepared including many examples of work that Ray has made over the years as well and work by photographers who have inspired me.  My goal with this guide is to help students plan some picture ideas ideas ahead of time so the day can be less stressful. Prop suggestions will be included as I have found props to be an important tool in my work.

2 weeks after the session Ray will host a print sharing session.  Students will gather show work and share their experiences, support and feedback will be an important part of this session.

Topics to be covered:

  • Communication and ethics when working with a nude model.  Learn how to talk with your subject to achieve the work you have in mind.
  • Pose and gesture.  How to make photographs the look natural and beautiful, creating a narrative along the way.
  • Finding studio space and models to work with.
  • Lighting the figure in a daylight setting.

The models in the sample photographs will be working with us on this workshop.
