Photopolymer photogravure with Ray Bidegain at Cascabel Press

2- Day workshops for small groups

Come to Cascabel Press in Portland Oregon and join printmaker and photographer Ray Bidegain for a 2-day workshop in polymer plate photogravure.  During this workshop you will learn how to print your original photographs using the timeless process of Photogravure. Learning to etch photopolymer plates using the DTP method of imaging and processing is an important part of this 2 day schedule. Ray will be making 2 plates for each student in advance to be used on the first day to learn how to ink your plate with traditional etching inks and print them using my Takach etching press. On both days students will continue to refine printing skills and learn the important nuances of printmaking. Needed materials will be supplied and students will leave the session with small editions of handmade polymer plate photogravures. No previous experience is required and students can work from digital camera files or files of scanned negatives, iPhone files can also work well.

My focus will be on your success and I will strive to send you home fully able to make prints on your own

Class is limited to 4 students, lunch will be provided.

Topics to be covered:

  • Direct to plate positives - during this workshop you will be producing digital files as positives and afterword using an epson printer to image polymer plates to be processed, trimmed, and readied for printing.

  • Exposing and developing the polymer plates.

  • Inks and materials needed for printmaking

  • Inking and wiping the plates

  • Paper selection

  • Printing the inked plates on a Takach etching press.

  • Finishing and presentation of the final prints.

  • Class limited to 4 students

Students will need digital files for the class either camera files or scans from negatives. Details about what will be needed will be provided before the session giving the students time to prepare.
