The Studio
A Small Room & Good Light
The is the Third edition of books by Ray Bidegain at Cascabel Press. The book will be an ambitious project for me and one I am excited about. I am planning a slightly larger book with more pictures than the previous editions. Look forward to more text in this book, I will be writing essays about my time in the studio, and captions with my thoughts.
I have found myself in a handful of studio spaces over the years, all with an important thing in common. They all were small rooms with good natural light. A big window and wall provided the simple space for me & my camera to connect with my subject. It is a quiet place, free of loud music and distraction, perfect for a conversation and honesty.
These are a selection of pictures made in the studio over the last 20 some years representing the 3 themes I explored. Portraits, Still Life, and the Nude, I have chosen 6 negatives from each and made hand pulled photogravure prints. These are honest photographs reflecting what is in this photographers heart.
This edition is being offered in 2 states:
Numbered Edition
Final numbered edition will be strictly limited 8 copies.
Edition will be signed by the artist, and numbered 1-8.
Overall size around 12"x12" hardbound.
Japanese stab binding.

This book will be housed in a cloth covered slip case along with a 19th photogravure self Portrait of the Artist.

All prints are hand-pulled by Ray Bidegain on a takach etching press. The text pages are printed letter press by Ray Bidegain and all are hand bound into books with a Japanese Stab binding.Image and paper sizes are approximate, Variations within the edition are possible and expected.

About Ray Bidegain
One Photographers Journey
For the last 22 years I have been lucky enough to spend my time working as a fine art photographer, and specifically working as a photographer who photographed using large format negatives and made platinum prints from the camera negatives.
The platinum period
Many of you have collected these platinum prints over the years and some of you have learned platinum printing from me along the way. I love the process and I have loved every minute of this period in my work. Platinum printing is an amazing and beautiful way to make photographs.
The Gravures
For the last five years I have started working on making photogravure prints, polymer plate photogravure prints, to be specific. I worked on it, decided I wanted to make a change and make a commitment to working as a printmaker making photogravure prints. You all know me as a person who likes handmade photography. Handmade objects are at the heart of my photographic journey and printmaking is all of that, and more.

for the last 32 years I have worked in the cozy basement of my 110 year old home in Portland Oregon. Your fine prints are made here and are a product of my love of photography and art.
